To Host "Climate Change Messenger"

Specially Trained Lecturers Will Present Gore’s Views on Global Warming

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –March 6, 2007–Former Vice President Al Gore is spreading the word about global warming through 1,000 Climate Change Messengers, specially trained to deliver the ideas expressed in his award-winning documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth.”  Silicon Valley Power, the City of Santa Clara’s municipal electric utility, will host John Allen, one of the change messengers, on two Mondays, March 12 and April 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Central Park Library, 2635 Homestead Road in Santa Clara.  Since space is limited, please make reservations by calling SVP at (408) 615-5647.

It is fitting that the Central Park Library, a member of Santa Clara Green Power, the 100 percent renewable energy option offered by SVP, should be the site for the lecture.  The library is an Environmental Protection Agency  (EPA) Green Power Partner.

Sponsored by Participant Productions, the messenger program is the first initiative developed by The Climate Project, a movement to educate and challenge citizens and governments to take a step towards making a difference in the global warming crisis.

“As an Academy Award-winner, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ helps puts the problem of global warming on the front burner for Americans and for the rest of the world,” says Larry Owens, Manager, Customer Services and Communications.  “We are pleased to be able to host the upcoming lectures and provide renewable energy programs in Santa Clara that really make a difference.”

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A period and breakout session, giving participants an opportunity to brainstorm solutions to the growing environmental problem.  In addition, SVP will give all attendees a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) to promote energy savings and to help protect the environment.

Since 1998, SVP has given away more than 33,000 CFLS, saving as much as one million kilowatt-hours.  If every American replaced just one bulb with a CFL, it could save $8 billion in energy costs and eliminate two million cars worth of greenhouse gas emissions.
