SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA) has promoted Andrea Abergel to Director of Water effective January 1, 2025, after a competitive search process. In this role, Abergel will lead CMUA's comprehensive water program, including legislative, regulatory, and policy initiatives.
Abergel, who joined CMUA in September 2020 as a Senior Regulatory Advocate and then was promoted to Manager of Water Policy, will oversee the organization's water advocacy efforts and represent CMUA's water member agencies in front of the Legislature along with leading CMUA staff on regulatory matters.
"We are thrilled that Andrea will be CMUA's next Director of Water," said Danielle Blacet-Hyden, CMUA’s incoming executive director. "She is a seasoned advocate with a laser focus on member service and will take the association to new heights in our water legislative and regulatory advocacy."
A licensed California attorney, Abergel brings extensive experience in environmental law and water policy to her new role. Prior to joining CMUA, she worked with Sacramento-based law firms, specializing in environmental issues including water quality, stormwater management, and ecosystem improvement. Her background includes expertise in California permitting, environmental regulations, and local government requirements.
"I look forward to continuing to serve CMUA's members in this elevated capacity," said Abergel. "We have a lot to achieve together, and I am honored to be at the helm of CMUA's water advocacy guiding policies and initiatives for the betterment of the public water community."
Abergel holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law, and a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Psychology from the University of California, Davis.
