Engineering Technologist
Under the general direction of the Engineering Manager, the Engineering Technologist is responsible for a variety of technical engineering work for water and power project to assist the Engineering, Maintenance and Operations divisions.    
The Engineering Technologist is in the Engineering Division, working with indirect supervision to perform tasks independently as well as working with other mechanical, electrical, operations and communications technicians, depending on the job. This position will work with internal and external engineering resources, performing duties within a broad framework of general policy and requires creativity and resourcefulness to accomplish goals and objectives. All work is expected to be carried out in an ethical, accurate, secure, timely and confidential manner.

  •  Prepares plans, specifications, engineering drawings, maps and as-built drawings. 
  • Administers security of drawings and engineering records in support of requirements prescribed by the agency, FERC, NERC, DSOD, etc.
  • Maintains all equipment manuals, maps, and drawings to ensure accurate as-built status.
  • Provides routine and complex assistance on engineering projects; conducts research to determine available data; prepares preliminary designs and plans; reviews with engineering staff.
  • Performs and attends design reviews and researches project design meetings with engineering staff.
  • Sponsors engineering contractors, per agency policy, to ensure work is performed as contracted.
  • Provides responsible technical assistance to engineering staff on projects, as assigned.
  • Performs field investigations and gathers data for the preparation of the design phase of projects.
  • Participates in the reproduction of plans and the preparation, filing and retrieval of engineering maps, documents and records.
  • Assists engineers in the preparation of bid specifications, design specifications and bid documents for projects; prepares exhibits and reports as required.
  • Prepares and reviews various reports for a variety of engineering activities.
  • Performs a variety of related office or field tasks to gather, analyze and record data; prepares a variety of letters and other correspondence related to tasks.
  • As assigned, sets up, modifies, updates, and maintains CAD standards; sets up and troubleshoots CAD computer station for the configuration of CAD programs and file sharing, plotting; trains staff in the use of AutoCAD, file sharing and related software as necessary.

Requirements KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Documentation applied drafting practice with mechanical, electrical and civil components and systems, as well as fundamentals of descriptive geometry, orthographic projection, sectioning, tolerancing and dimensioning, and basic computer aided drafting and design with technical depth.
  • The application of physics and engineering fundamentals having an emphasis in applied power generation, application of physics having emphasis in mechanical and/or electrical and/or civil components.
  • The application of manuals, handbooks, material and/or equipment specifications, and related software in advanced drafting/design. Competency in the application of current codes and standards with open-ended design experiences that integrate materials, manufacturing, design analysis, and graphics. Understanding of concepts relating to the environmental and economic impacts of design.
  • Design of machine and electrical elements, advanced drafting including current three-dimensional computer representations as related to mechanical, electrical and civil design. Advanced proficiency in at least three drafting / design related areas, consistent with the technical orientation of the program.
  • Selection, set-up and calibration of instrumentation and the preparation of laboratory reports and system associated with the development, installation, and maintenance of mechanical and electrical components and systems.
  • Principles of modern records management and techniques
  • Technical communications, oral and written, typical of those required to prepare and present proposals, reports and specifications.
  • Modern office equipment including use of word processing, database and spreadsheet applications.
  • Principles and practices of motivation, team building, conflict resolution and customer services.

2-5 years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering experience with an Associate's degree from an accredited college or univeristy in Engineering Technology or a related field


5-10 years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering experience with a high school diploma or equivalent

Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited college or university in Engineering Technology or related field. Minimum five years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering experience.  Proficient with AutoCAD.

License or Certificate:
Possession of, and ability to maintain an appropriate valid California Driver's License.
