CMUA Commends Governor’s New Goals for Zero-Emission Vehicles
California’s publicly owned utilities are working collaboratively to ensure reliable and affordable power for clean vehicles.
(Sacramento, Calif., September 23, 2020) — An Executive Order issued today from Governor Gavin Newsom sets new ambitious goals for Zero-Emission Vehicles in California and prohibits the sale of new gas-powered vehicles after 2035. These measures would significantly reduce carbon emissions in California and put the transportation sector on a timeline and scale for decarbonization that is similar to the state’s electric sector.
“CMUA commends Governor Newsom’s focus on reducing carbon emissions from the transportation sector, which accounts for more than 40 percent of statewide carbon emissions,” said Barry Moline, CMUA executive director. “We look forward to working with state leaders, regulators and stakeholders to identify funding pathways to power the state’s clean vehicle fleet of the future while also ensuring the electric grid can continue to provide sustainable, reliable and affordable electricity to Californians.”
California has already set aggressive renewable energy standards and zero-carbon goals for the electric system, which accounts for only 15 percent of statewide emissions yet has achieved most of California’s carbon emission reductions to date.
CMUA members — publicly owned electric utilities that together provide electricity to 25 percent of the state — will continue to reduce carbon emissions moving forward as utilities work to meet the state’s climate standards and goals. CMUA member utilities are complying with the state’s Renewables Portfolio Standard, which requires 60 percent renewable energy by 2030, and are actively working with state leaders on a statewide assessment for achieving a 100 percent zero-carbon grid by 2045. CMUA’s member utilities also participate in the state’s Cap and Trade program, which imposes a declining carbon emissions cap over time.
